Lecture series looks to senator

U.S. Sen. Susan Collins

One of the nation’s most respected leaders in homeland security, Sen. Susan Collins (R-Maine), visited The University of Mississippi last spring to deliver a public address and meet with students.

Collins is the ranking member and former chairman of the Senate Homeland Security Committee. In 2004, Collins co-authored the Collins-Lieberman Intelligence Reform Act, which represented the most sweeping changes to America’s intelligence community in 50 years.

In her UM address, she discussed the Iraq war and outlined the accomplishments and challenges of the Homeland Security Committee. Collins also talked about her role in investigating the federal response to Hurricane Katrina.

Maine voters elected Collins to represent them in the U.S. Senate in 1996 and again in 2002.

“Senator Collins has earned a national reputation for working across party lines to seek consensus on the nation’s most important issues,” said former Sen. Trent Lott (R-Miss.), who accompanied Collins on her visit to the Oxford campus. “Her work as chairman of the Senate Homeland Security Committee, coupled with her work on the Armed Services Committee, has made her renowned for her expertise and her dedication to protecting our nation.

“She is the first woman to lecture as a part of the Trent Lott Leadership Lecture Series, and I was delighted to have her here with me at Ole Miss. She’s a tenacious, persistent and extremely effective legislator.”

Past speakers in the lecture series include U.S. Sen. John McCain (R-Ariz.), former U.S. Treasury Secretary John Snow and King Abdullah II bin al-Hussein of Jordan.
